Understanding South Africa PAYE (2023)

🏛️ What is PAYE?

Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) is the method used by employers to deduct tax from your salary and pay it over to SARS on your behalf. It ensures you pay your income tax liability in manageable monthly amounts.

📊 Tax Calculations & Rebates

South Africa uses a sliding scale (progressive) tax system ranging from 18% to 45% based on your total taxable income.

  • Primary Rebate: R16,425 (Available to all natural persons)
  • Secondary Rebate: R9,000 (Additional for age 65-74)
  • Tertiary Rebate: R2,997 (Additional for age 75+)

💼 UIF & SDL

  • UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund): 1% is deducted from your salary, and your employer contributes another 1%. Capped at a salary ceiling of R17,712/month (Max deduction R177.12).
  • SDL (Skills Development Levy): Paid by the employer (1% of payroll) to fund skills development. It is not deducted from your salary.
