Understanding South Africa Income Tax

📈 How Income Tax Works (Progressive Tables)

South Africa uses a sliding scale (progressive) tax system. You are taxed at higher rates only on the portion of income that falls into higher brackets.

  • Taxable Income: Your gross income minus allowable deductions (Retirement, Donations, etc.).
  • Marginal Rate: The rate of tax applied to your last Rand earned.
  • Effective Rate: The actual percentage of your total income that goes to tax (Total Tax / Gross Income).

🎁 Tax Rebates (The "Discount")

Rebates reduce the actual tax you pay and are granted to all natural persons.

  • Primary Rebate: R14,955 (Available to everyone).
  • Secondary Rebate: Additional R8,199 (For age 65+).
  • Tertiary Rebate: Additional R2,736 (For age 75+).

🏥 Medical Scheme Fees Tax Credits (MTC)

A fixed monthly credit that reduces your tax liability if you are a member of a medical scheme.

  • 2021 Rates: R319 for the main member and first dependent; R215 for each additional dependent.

👴 Retirement Fund Contributions

Contributions to Pension, Provident, and Retirement Annuity funds are tax-deductible, subject to limits:

  • Cap of 27.5% of remuneration or taxable income (whichever is higher).
  • Annual monetary cap of R350,000.
